Day 28: Do you do any other crafts besides crochet? What are they, and did learning to crochet come before or after learning these other crafts?

I learned to do many things as a child (crafty mum, Catholic all-girls school...). I did a lot of cross stitch before, but then I got tired - it was too heavy on the eyes and required a lot of concentration and work (since I only worked on big projects).

I buy at local yarn shops. The ones "around the corner", their owners are not precisely the most amiable people on earth, so I mostly buy at this big store, where they have a ridiculously small selection but at least it is all at my hands (I can touch it all!!) and they give me all the time in the world. (Picture me juggling 5 different skeins back and forth checking if the colours go well together...)

No, I haven't and I am not much interested, although I haven't looked much into it either. Basically, any kind of structure, deadline or commitment, kills all the fun for me. I'm a rebel and a loner. ;-)

Definitely! Although I don't pay much attention... I prefer to be listening to music or talk-shows on the radio.

I've only used metal/steel hooks. Now I almost exclusively work with 3 and 4 mm. Clover hooks. They are so nice and comfortable!

Day 17: Have you ever had a project that you loved become ruined? What’s the story behind it?

No, I haven't (fingers crossed!). But that is my nightmare, and I get ANXIOUS every time I have to assemble or add details to an amigurumi, because any little thing can "ruin" a doll (or at least my "perfect" vision of it). With practice, I've become more confident and assembling is not such a big problem now, but things like glueing the eyes... Shivers!

Mmm, do I have to answer this?... So... The pattern I less enjoyed would be the Lili Rose Elfe. I thought it was unnecessarily complicated and instructions for the hair wig  were not very clear. That being said, it produced one of my most favourite dolls, so go figure!

Misi es una pequeña criatura de ojos verdes desparejados. Le puse esos ojos como una broma pero la verdad es que le dan mucha personalidad. Para seguir con el chiste, me lo probé como un colgante. Creo que quedará mejor como un broche, sólo necesito encontrar el imperdible perfecto.

Misi is a tiny creature with mismatching green eyes. I used those eyes as a joke but they actually gave him a lot of character. In the same humorous vein, I tried it on as a pendant. Mi querida Marieta

Marieta fue la primera cosa que hice como Amigurumi allá por mayo de 2010 cuando probé esta técnica por primera vez. El patrón es "Amigurumi Doll Pattern" by Soph Stitch.

Está lejos de ser perfecta y sin embargo, es PERFECTA. :-)

Una aguja demasiado grande, colores que no conjuntan, quedarte sin hilo a mitad del trabajo, demasiado relleno (todas las instrucciones hacían énfasis en rellenar fuerte y me pasé), un cabello y detalles faciales espantosos... pero aprendí mucho.

Luego volví a repetir este patrón, y el resultado fue Carlota. Creo que esta muñeca muestra mis progresos en esto del amigurumi, ¿no? ;-) Los detalles faciales siguen siendo regulares pero se ve que algo mejora.

Marieta was the first Amigurumi thing I made back in May 2010 when I first started trying this craft. The pattern is "Amigurumi Doll Pattern" by Soph Stitch. She is far from perfect, and yet she is PERFECT. :-) Too big size hook, mismatching colours, running out of yarn midway, too much stuffing (all the instructions told me to stuff tightly and I overdid it), awful amateur hair and face details, but it was a great learning experience. More photos of Marieta over at Flickr. Later I repeated this pattern again, and the result was Carlota. This second doll shows some progress in my amigurumi abilities, I think. ;-) Still not too good on the face details but definitely an improvement. Find more Carlota photos over at Flickr. Cuando me empecé a aficionar al amigururmi, una de las primeras personas cuyos trabajos me hicieron babear fue Beth Doherty. Los increíbles detalles de sus muñecos son deliciosos.

Por eso me hizo muy feliz encontrar este libro mientras andaba de compras en internet. No había visto este libro en su web, lo que me parece extraño porque si yo tuviera un libro como este me aseguraría de que lo vieran, pero... Probablemente tenga una buena razón para ello.

Después de echarle un vistazo y ver los patrones por encima, me decidí a empezar con el patrón de The Hep Cat, y este es el resultado:





Miren esos deditos, dan ganas de comérselos. ¡Marieta no podía quitarle sus ojos de botón de encima!

When I became interested in Amigurumi, one of the first people whose works made me just drool was Beth Doherty. The amazing fine detail of her dolls is just delicious. That is why I was so happy to find this book while randomly shopping online. I haven't seen this book on her website, which I found odd because if I had a book like this under my name I'm sure I would get to show it to you, but... There is probably a good reason for it. After some reading and flickering through the patterns, I decided to start working on The Hep Cat pattern, and here is the result. Look at those toes, sweet like candy. I consider myself a beginner and I know very little about this world yet. So far, my favourite patterns are the Patch Doll pattern by reeneegurumi (www.irenestrange.co.uk) and the humanoids in the book “Amigurumi! Super Happy Crochet Cute” by Beth Doherty (www.gourmetamigurumi.com).

I use acrylics. I pick the best ones I can get in the cheapest range. I also like this kind of yarn to make funny hair. I don’t like anything that needs a thin hook.

Oh dear, I don’t know. I make amigurumi, I’m learning, so everything has been a challenge up to here! My current “challenge” is to make dolls in the style of Elisabeth Doherty and Rivka Wilkins. I can’t get tired of looking at those photos and dreaming!

Day 7: Your least favourite?

Mmm… That would be Pucca. Everybody loved her (I don’t exactly hate her either, I did all I could for her, hahaha), and she is, I think, my most popular photo on Tumblr, with an astonishing count of 25 notes (duh). BUT. Stuffing that head gave me nightmares, the hair wig didn’t fit and I had to improvise, and her cuteness factor was far too low in my book. So, yeah, sorry dolly. :-S

Day 5: How long did it take from the time your learned how to crochet, to finish your first project?

Tricky question, because I don’t remember what I did as a child, although surely nothing you could call a “project”. Present time, I spent a few days reading about amigurumi, watching videos, and trying simple shapes. Then - as seen on my Ravelry - I started Marieta on May 14 and finished her on May 21.

Day 4: How did you learn how to crochet?

I picked it up from my mother when I was a peanut who followed her closely and inspected her every move. I also picked knitting and a little bit on sewing - although sewing always seemed like a lot of tedious work to me… pitty.

Fast-forward to the present days, when the thought “I want to learn this amigurumi thing” suddenly popped in my head, I watched these videos from WyreMySoul @YouTube and I was like: “I can do that!”.

Bob Esponja y Patricio

Había visto estos patrones en The Late Night Hooker: este es Bob Esponja y este es Patricio. Bob Esponja me parecía demasiado grande para mis necesidades, así que empecé por hacer a Patricio y luego adapté el patrón de Bob Esponja a su tamaño. Abajo incluyo mi versión del patrón, por si lo quieren usar. Es mi primera "creación" y el primer patrón que escribo, ¡lo hice lo mejor que pude! Usé hilo acrílico y una aguja de 3 mm y mi Bob Esponja tiene una altura aproximada de 20 cm. (7.8 inches).
Necesitaba hacer un tercer muñeco así que después de investigar un poco descubrí que Bob Esponja tuvo una mascota que era un caballito de mar y se llamaba Misterio, así que hice uno a partir de este patrón.

I had eyed these patterns at The Late Night Hooker: here's SpongeBob and here's Patrick Starr. I thought her SpongeBob was too big for me, so I made Patrick first and then adapted SpongeBob's pattern to make it smaller. I'll reproduce my version of the pattern at the end of this post, in case you want to use it. I should warn you, this is my first “creation” and the first pattern I write. I tried my best! I used acrylic yarn and a 3 mm hook and my SpongeBob's height is aprox. 20 cm (7.8 inches). I needed a third toy so I did some research and found out that at some point SpongeBob had a pet seahorse that he named Mystery, and so I made Mystery out of this pattern. Se busca una criatura extraña de ojos verdes

Compré unos cuantos (ejem... 200) ojos móviles, y hoy los examiné. Esto es lo había en un paquete:

Ya sé que prometían 100 ojos, y 4 ojos en 4 tamaños en 6 colores da un total de 96 ojos, así que hacían falta otros 4 ojos, pero... ¿no sería mejor que esos 4 estuvieran emparejados? Ahora no me queda más remedio que crear alguna criatura extraña que solo tenga un ojo verde, o que tenga 2 de distinto tamaño.

I bought a few (cough... 200) wiggle eyes, and today I checked them out. Here's what I got in one pack. I know you promised 100 eyes, and 4 eyes in 4 sizes in 6 colours left you at 96, so you needed 4 extra eyes to keep your word, but... Couldn't those 4 eyes match in size as well as in colour? You've now set me up to come up with strange green-eyed creatures that either have only 1 eye, or portray different sized eyes. Such a boost to my creativity!

30 Days of Crocheting Challenge - Day 1

Day 1: What was your first finished project?

Let’s not count the stuff I made as a child, because I don’t remember and I think I was more into knitting anyway. I started learning about amigurumi in May 2010 and my first project was Marieta.

She turned out huge, colours are a disaster because I used whatever my mother had available around the house (and run out of some colour mid-project), I stuffed too much and the dress was too small, hair and face are far from cute, BUT I love her. :-)

Hay un estupendo tutorial en vídeo en Nerdigurumi sobre como poner alambres en las extremidades de un muñeco.Nunca he probado a hacer esto, sólo he usado limpiapipas. Me gustaría probar esta técnica.

There's a cool video tutorial on Nerdigurumi about wiring amigurumi crochet doll limbs.I haven't yet wired many of my dolls and what I've used so far is pipe-cleaners. I'm actually looking forward to give this other technique a try!

Este pequeño y feliz Rudolph va a viajar hasta el hogar de la escritora Maureen Johnson, donde con un poco de suerte encontrará un lugar entre sus decoraciones navideñas.

Usé el patrón Happy Reindeer by Lion Brand Yarn. Es muy fácil y rápido de hacer. Le puse ojos de 15 mm., que quedan muy lindos en amigurumi, más que los ojos más pequeños. Las medias-sonrisas también se ganan los corazones. ;-)

This little happy-looking Rudolph will be travelling to the home of writer Maureen Johnson, where he will hopefully gain a place among her Christmas decorations. I used the Happy Reindeer by Lion Brand Yarn pattern. It is really easy and quick to work through. I used 15 mm. eyes, which I find to be very cute on amigurumi, as opposed to smaller eyes. Mi primer intento de hacer uno de los adorables Pocket Spirits de Beth.

Soy demasiado perezosa para hacer esos finos vestiditos de crochet, así que le hice una especie de túnica con este patrón. Para el pelo intenté emular un revoltijo de hojas de otoño con este hilo. La flor y sus hojas las hice a partir de este patrón.

My first attempt at making one of the adorable Pocket Spirits by Beth. I am too lazy for fine crochet dresses, so I made a little tunic out of this pattern. For the hair -a mess of fallen autumn foliage- I used this yarn. Finally I added the flower and leaves that I took from this pattern. (Find all my "Willow" photos at Flickr)

Esta es nueva muñequita, una dulce sirenita. Es muy bonita y es muy fácil y rápida de hacer. Me encanta el pelo; compré ese hilo en rebajas hace un tiempo pensando que quedaría bonito como cabello y me encanta el resultado.

This is my latest dolly, a sweet mermaid. She's pretty cute and it was super easy and quick to make. I really like the hair; I bought that yarn on sale a while ago thinking it would be cute for hairs and I love the results. Pili sale de un diseño de Rossella Spagnoli que pueden encontrar en Ravelry. Ahora bien, la muñeca que me salía a mí no se parecía en nada a la imagen del patrón, así que improvisé: le hice las piernas más flacas, las manos más redondas, le puse un sombrero... (Más fotos de Pili en Flickr)

Pili comes from a design by Rossella Spagnoli that you can find on Ravelry. However, my doll was turning out like nothing on that pattern, so I basically did what I wanted with it: Thinner legs, rounder hands, a hat...

Lapicero

Me encantan los lápices y se me ha ocurrido que sería genial hacer un set entero de lápices de colores (sin la goma, y con ojos más bonitos pequeños y dulces.

El patrón es The Nubby by K4TT y también lo pueden encontrar en Ravelry.

Pucca (¡y Macarena!)

La verdad es que no soy fan de Pucca (no la conozco) pero pensé que sería divertido probar este patrón. Es un patrón de Berry Goblinfly que se puede encontrar en Ravelry.

No estoy del todo satisfecha con el resultado. Para empezar, la "peluca" resultó más grande que la cabeza, así que en lugar de hacerla de nuevo añadí algo de relleno entre la cabeza y el pelo. Creo que soy demasiado exigente conmigo misma. ;-)   (Mas fotos de Pucca en Flickr)

Hace un tiempo hice otra muñeca con un patrón de Berry Goblinfly.



Le puse de nombre Macarena, como una amiga mía, pero el patrón se llama Lili Rose y también lo pueden encontrar en Ravelry. Resultó un poco complicada y me salté algunas instrucciones, pero me encantó el resultado. Es una de mis favoritas. (Más fotos de Macarena en Flickr)

 I'm not really a fan of Pucca but I thought this pattern would be a fun thing to try. It's a free pattern by Berry Goblinfly that you can find at Ravelry. I'm not totally happy with the result. For one thing, the hair-wig turned out bigger than the head so (instead of trying to make a new one) I had to add some fibrefill between hair and head. It is probably just a case of me being too demanding with my own work.;-) (Find all my "Pucca" photos at Flickr). While we are on it, let me tell you I had already made one other doll from a pattern by Berry Goblinfly. I called her Macarena after a friend of mine, but the pattern goes by Lili Rose and you can find it at Ravelry as well. ¡Vivan los novios!

Estos novios están hechos con un patrón gratis de Lion Brand Yarn (hay que registrarse pero tienes acceso a un montón de patrones muy interesantes): Amigurumi Bunny Wedding Cake Topper by Lion Brand Yarn. También lo pueden encontrar en Ravelry.

Es muy fácil de hacer y quedan muy bonitos. Los conejitos van cosidos en una pieza circular, y le puse unas perlitas a la novia y les uní las manos con una puntada.

You can also queue it at Ravelry. It's very easy to make and they are really cute. The bunnies are attached onto a circular piece. TEC - Vivan los novios

¡He vuelto! Me he tomado un tiempo de descanso. He estado entretenida con esto del "amigurumi" últimamente y he tenido bastante éxito. :-)

Este es mi trabajo en curso, obviamente es para unos que se casan pronto. La pena es que van a llegar tarde a la ceremonia, es una lástima.

 I'm back! I just had to take it easy for a while. I've been kind of busy with this "amigurumi" stuff lately, and mind you, I've been quite successful. :-) This is my current project, obviously for some soon-to-be-married. They are going to be late for the ceremony, shame.
